Our Area
Northumberland Movie

Traditionally, most of our callouts occurred in the upland areas of the Northumberland National Park. However, as the Team grew our role also grew and now the area we cover is the whole of the Northumbria Police Authority area, which is Northumberland, Tyne and Wear. This is approximately 2159 square miles, one of the largest search areas served by any team in England and Wales. The diagram illustrates our area.

This encompasses the following:

The main walking areas:

  •     The Cheviots Hills to the North of the River Coquet
  •     The Simonsides
  •     The Roman Wall -- Hadrian's Wall
  •     Kielder Forest
  •     Allendale and the head of the River South Tyne
The main climbing areas:
  •     Bowden Doors
  •     Kyloe Craggs
  •     Corby's Crag
  •     Kielder Forest
  •     Cheviot -- Henhole and Bizzle Burn
  •     The Wanney's
  •     Crag Lough

In addition to this, there are the coastal areas ( although this is the domain of the Coast Guard ). More increasingly, the Team is asked by Northumbria Police to assist in wide open spaces in urban and semi-urban areas. This invariablely involves the search for young persons and the vunerable.
The Team may also be asked to assist the other Teams in the North East Search and Rescue Association (NESRA). In which case we will respond and travel to parts of North Yorkshire and Durham High Pennines.
The Team has also been called to assist in very long sustained searches lasting several days. Thankfully, this is rare.
